West Virginia's Premier Council
The original charter of the Southwestern District Labor Council was issued by the Federation of Labor to the "Central Labor Union" of Huntington, WV.
on August 13, 1920. This Charter remained active for 37 years until the Federation of Labor
issued the "Huntington District Labor Council" a new Charter on November 11, 1957.
Eventually the Southwestern District Labor Council, AFL-CIO was issued its charter from President Lane Kirkland on November 18, 1982
to the Officers Richard Wilkes, A. W. Clark, Sherman Gallimore, Richard Akers, Sherry Dean, Cecil Dean,
and Harold Joyce.
Purpose
The Southwestern District Labor Council remains an active presence throughout its 5 county jurisdiction, and a vocal opponent
to the oppression of working families in the communities where we live. By remaining active in the community the Southwestern District
Labor Council demonstrates to everyone in organized labor that we should be working to recover our market share and increase our density
in a forcebul yet positive manner. Union education is not for union people only. At the council we attempt to demonstrate
how education works for all men and women.
